Chest X-Rays at Home

Regular x-rays, exams, and diagnostic procedures can make inconvenient trips to a hospital or clinic stack up. With at-home nursing services, Kinkaid Private Care can bring advanced imaging and diagnostic equipment to the comfort of home. A chest x-ray at home is one of the many imaging and diagnostic tools available to our patients and can ease the burden of healthcare for you or your loved one.

Can I Get a Chest X-Ray at Home?

X-rays have historically been an imaging technique that required large machines, typically housed in a hospital or outpatient clinic. But with the advent of portable x-ray machines, mobile diagnostic imaging services can now provide chest x-rays at home. These machines are small enough to fit inside a vehicle, provide the same image quality as x-rays at a clinic, and can be rapidly digitized and sent to outside providers.

With current technology, it is no longer necessary to travel to specialized imaging facilities for a chest x-ray. Home health care can bring imaging equipment directly to your house, making the imaging process simple and convenient.

Features and Benefits of Mobile X-Rays

This innovative technology provides essential services to people with a variety of medical needs. At-home chest x-rays benefit people who:

  • Are bed-ridden
  • Cannot make it to an imaging facility for scans
  • Require specialized transportation to visit outside facilities
  • Need routine chest x-rays
  • Value convenience in their healthcare choices
  • Feel more comfortable receiving care in their own home

The convenience and practicality of mobile x-rays make it a valuable tool for providers and patients alike. In addition, mobile chest x-rays are completely painless, non-invasive, and provide the same level of detail found at a specialized imaging facility.

What a Chest X-Ray Detects

Your doctor may request a chest x-ray for a variety of reasons. Most commonly, chest x-rays are used to detect issues such as:

  • Cancers of the lung and surrounding areas
  • Changes in the size or shape of the heart
  • Heart problems that impact the lung
  • Changes after surgery in the chest
  • Fractured ribs or spine
  • Respiratory diseases such as pneumonia or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Getting your chest x-ray at home can detect these issues rapidly and accurately. Your results will be sent to your medical provider for assessment to receive your results.

Are Mobile Chest X-Rays Safe?

X-ray technologies are a valuable tool for allowing your physician to “see inside” your body, gaining visual verification of medical conditions that they can otherwise only suspect. While x-rays are considered exceptionally safe, they do have a very small inherent risk due to the radiation that is used to produce images. Excessive radiation can increase the risk for some types of cancers, but the dose of radiation for a chest x-ray is so small as to be almost negligible.

For context, most people are exposed to about 3 millisieverts (mSv) of radiation each year from environmental factors alone. This radiation comes primarily from cosmic rays and the natural gas in our homes. Radiation exposure is a natural part of our lives and not a cause for concern until extremely high levels of exposure.

A mobile chest x-ray produces about 0.1 mSv of radiation, roughly equivalent to 10 days of background radiation. It should also be noted that radiation alone does not cause cancer – rather, it only increases the risk of cancer. The medical benefits of x-rays far outweigh the increased risk, but if you have concerns about the safety of an x-ray, speak to your medical provider.

What You Need for an At-Home X-Ray

Our expert medical team will provide all the equipment and expertise needed to complete your chest x-ray. Home health care professionals will come to you with the x-ray machine, specialized imaging equipment, and computers equipped with the software required to capture high-quality digital images. Mobile x-ray machines are still large and require an open flat surface on the ground near the patient.

To prepare for an at-home x-ray, simply find a place where you can sit or lie still while the scans take place. This can be a couch, bed, or chair. Your x-ray technician will position the equipment, place a specialized plate behind your chest, and provide any instructions needed to complete the scan. For a chest x-ray, the technician will typically take multiple images from different angles and may require you to stand, hold your arms to the side, or rotate your shoulders.
