Aftercare Planning for Substance Abuse in CA

As part of Kinkaid’s In-Home Detox service, we offer extensive detox aftercare planning for our clients to ensure a smooth transition to the next step in the recovery process. Going through detox is a crucial step toward sobriety, but it is only the first step. Because of this, we help our clients ensure they have an effective and realistic detox aftercare plan so they can smoothly transition to the next phase of recovery.

What is Detox Aftercare Planning?

Detox aftercare planning is the process of developing a comprehensive post-detox plan so you can continue your path toward full recovery. Remember, detox is only the first step of the recovery process. After completing detox, a client should enroll in one of the two following longer-term treatment programs, and aftercare planning can help you figure out what is best for you:

  • Outpatient Treatment: This is when a client receives treatment at a facility, but does not stay overnight. In other words, the client is never admitted into the hospital for an extended period of time; rather, he or she goes to treatment, but leaves after each visit.
  • Residential Treatment (Rehab): This is when a client checks into a treatment facility and stays for an extended period of time. In this case, the client lives in the treatment facility until he or she recovers.

Treatment programs offer diverse options depending on personal preferences, flexibility in scheduling, and the level of care that is most appropriate for you. In general, though, your post-detox treatment program will include the following, details of which will be discussed in your detox aftercare plan:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Many substance use disorders begin as a means of self-medication for emotional issues or distorted thought patterns. CBT can help the client identify the dysfunctional thought patterns that led to the maladaptive behavioral response. The therapist guides the client toward shifting these self-defeating thoughts toward positive, constructive thoughts that result in healthy behaviors. Other effective psychotherapies include motivational enhancement therapy (MET), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and contingency management (CM).
  • Group Therapy: This social component of recovery is a central feature in rehab programs. Sharing personal stories and experiences with others who also battle drug or alcohol addiction helps build social support and self-confidence. A skilled therapist will guide discussions, provide feedback, and teach new coping skills.
  • Relapse Prevention Planning: An essential aspect of recovery is relapse prevention planning, where the client identifies his or her own particular triggers that could result in relapse, as well as the actions to take when these triggers occur.
  • Holistic Activities: Holistic activities play an important role in recovery. Because stress is a common trigger for relapse, teaching individuals in recovery the benefits of relaxation techniques becomes an important coping skill. These activities might include yoga, meditation, art therapy, journaling, or therapeutic massage.

What Does Kinkaid’s Detox Aftercare Planning Look Like?

To help you transition from in-home detox to a longer-term rehab or treatment program similar to what we outlined above, our team of nurses work with you to create an appropriate detox aftercare plan that meets your specific goals and needs. And while we customize your plan to work for you, all of our detox aftercare plans prioritize the following points, which are all necessary to create a successful post-detox experience:

  • Building a Strong Nurse-Client Relationship: Our highly trained and professional nurses prioritize building a strong relationship with our clients. We dedicate our time and energy to learning about your specific goals and needs and building a mutual sense of trust. This emphasis on relationship building allows us to fully understand what you are looking for and what you are willing to do to reach sobriety. We can then work with you to create a detox aftercare plan that works specifically for you.
  • Excellent Communication with Clients and Families: While building a strong relationship with our clients, we prioritize communication with you and your loved ones to ensure everyone is on the same page and that you receive everything you need in a timely and effective manner. This involves working with you to establish detailed and realistic goals, as well as answering any questions you may have.
  • Finding the Right Post-Detox Treatment Program: We work with you to explore all options for your post-detox long-term treatment. As mentioned above, once you complete your detox, you will enter either an outpatient treatment program or a residential treatment facility. Upon working together to find the right program for you, we help you enroll and are there for you every step of the way to ensure the process goes smoothly.
  • Coordinating Post-Detox Therapy Appointments: Our detox aftercare planning team can coordinate all logistics for your post-detox therapy. We work with your therapist or psychiatrist to create a treatment schedule that works for you.
  • Early Planning to Ensure Success — Starting Day 3: We start our aftercare planning on day three of your home detox treatment. This early planning allows us to develop a comprehensive aftercare plan with the ability to make changes as necessary as you near the end of your detox.
  • Coordinating Post-Detox Medication — Starting Day 4: Our team of nurses begins medication reconciliation on day four and obtains full discharge instructions from our physician. We then provide you with full instructions for continuing your medication, as well as follow-up recommendations.
  • Detox Review and Post-Detox Prep — Starting Day 5: As a part of prioritizing excellent communication with our clients, we start preparing you on day five for your discharge from detox. We go through all post-detox details with you and answer any questions you may have, all with the goal of ensuring you understand your next steps and are confident in your treatment.
