An intervention should never be attempted without a professional counselor, psychologist, social worker, or specially trained interventionist. Due to the confrontational nature of an intervention, the risk of harm or resentment is high if not handled appropriately.
Interventions for Family or Loved Ones
A drug or alcohol intervention can be a valuable tool to help your loved one find the motivation to seek treatment, break free from their addiction, and start living a better life. But an intervention is a serious step to take – and requires the help of a specially trained interventionist if you want to see productive results. What is an Intervention?
A drug and alcohol intervention is a way for friends and family members to help the people they love overcome a substance use disorder. An intervention is not a treatment itself – but a way to encourage people who are resistant to seeking treatment to finally accept that they need help and to enroll in a substance use treatment program.
The common perception of a drug or alcohol intervention is a group of friends and family members surprising their loved one struggling with an addiction in a circle, encouraging them to seek help and explaining the harm their addiction has caused. And while this confrontational moment is a key aspect of a successful intervention, significant planning and preparation needs to be done first to maximize the likelihood that the intervention is a success.
When to Intervene
An intervention is a serious endeavor – and should only be undertaken provided two key conditions are met. First, it should be clear that your loved one is suffering from a substance use disorder, not just using substances recreationally. Addiction has several signs and symptoms that may indicate this is the case, including:
Secondly, it’s typically recommended that you try speaking to your loved one about their addiction and getting treatment first. An intervention is an extreme measure, that can often result in resentment or damaged relationships if everything doesn’t go to plan. Before seeking out an interventionist, sit down one-on-one with your loved one and share your concerns about their substance use problem, and see if they’d be willing to go to treatment before taking more intensive measures.
Do Interventions Work?
Perhaps the most important question to be answered when researching interventions is if they work. In our experience, people who receive an intervention accept treatment roughly 80% of the time. But even if your loved one doesn’t accept treatment straight way, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your intervention was a failure.
When a person is living with an addiction, they often believe they are only harming themselves. An intervention shows them how their actions affect the people they love and provides a clear path to receiving evidence-based treatment that can start them on the path to sobriety. Even unsuccessful interventions can plant a seed of recovery that will bloom in time.
